Cherry Hill East awarded Gannett Grant! As one of more than a dozen recent recipients of a Courier-Post Gannett Foundation grant, Cherry Hill High School East will use its $5,000 award to expand its journalism laboratory.
Greg Gagliardi, a journalism and English teacher at the school, applied for the grant through the Cherry Hill Education Foundation, which received the money from the foundation.
"We were extremely grateful and appreciative to receive the grant and notified the teacher, superintendent and school board immediately," said Eleanor Stofman, president of the Cherry Hill Education Foundation. "We are thrilled this opportunity came to pass, especially in these hard economic times."
"Working together with businesses and organizations will mean tremendous benefits for our students," she added.
In the spring and fall of 2008, the Courier-Post Gannett Foundation awarded over $49,000 in grants to 14 other community organizations.
Currently the journalism laboratory at the high school has five computers equipped with the software used to help teach journalism classes and design the school's newspaper.
With the grant, Gagliardi plans to purchase more computers, which will centralize the newsroom and mean less hours spent outside of the school day working on the publication.
"Right now in addition to class time our editors spend well over 10 hours a week doing things for the paper," said Gagliardi. "This will add legitimacy to our program and make it easier for students."
"We started a Web site two months ago which adds four to five stories and photos a day. The problem has always been that there's just not enough computers," continued Gagliardi. "Now we can update it daily and have enough resources for the students."
The Gannett Foundation is a corporate foundation sponsored by Gannett Co. Inc., which provides grants to organizations in the communities in which Gannett owns a daily newspaper or television station. The Courier-Post is a Gannett publication.
"We tend to focus on education and grants that will help those in need," said Walt T. Lafferty, president and publisher of the Courier-Post. "As long as the impact of the grant is positive to their mission, then I'll be happy."

Cheer to Cherry Hill Dancers Courier-Post Editorial CHEER: To the dancers who starred in a fundraiser on Sunday that raised $20,000 for the Cherry Hill Education Foundation. Modeled on the successful TV program "Dancing With The Stars," the audience picked a winning couple by donating money in their names.
But it will be the Cherry Hill students and faculty who ultimately win. The foundation will use the donations to help fund teacher and district requests.
We applaud the efforts of Brad Molotsky and Marje Major, the evening's top dancers as indicated by audience contributions, as well as the other couples who donated their time and energy. And we also commend the audience for its participation and generosity. Shelby Smith is an Olympic dancer and physical education teacher at Cherry Hill High School West, where she coaches both the cheerleading squad and the dance team. She is a Cherry Hill West woman, through and through.
Smith and Gagliardi represent two rival schools from two different sides of town. But on Sunday night, they set rivalries aside. And they danced.
Wearing a matching hip-hop-infused ensemble that featured sneakers cool enough to make every screaming teenager in the audience swoon, Smith and Gagliardi were one of the 16 couples in the first-ever "Dancing With The Cherry Hill Stars," a fundraiser Sunday that brought in more than $20,000 for township schools.
Each couple consisted of a local dancer with professional experience, like Smith, and a Cherry Hill "star" -- including Bobby Chez, the crabcake king of South Jersey; Kyle Brooks, a township police detective; and Frank Falcone, a Cherry Hill councilman.
About 1,000 people -- from students to grandparents of students -- attended the Cherry Hill Education Foundation event at Cherry Hill West.
Couples, who donned professional-caliber outfits for the occasion, each delivered a short dance to the musical selection of their choice.
Instead of voting online or by phone for the best couple as on television's "Dancing With The Stars," audience members put money in bags designated for each couple.
"Since this is all about kids and all about education, why not vote for two of us who are teachers?" asked Gagliardi in his post-dance pitch to the audience.
Chez, meanwhile, told the audience to support him "because I'm old."
The couple with the most money -- Couple No. 9, Brad Molotsky, a 1982 Cherry Hill West graduate, and Marjie Major, a former Eagles cheerleader who owns Happy Feet Dance Studio in Cherry Hill -- won.
The Cherry Hill Education Foundation timed the event to coincide with the season finale of the wildly popular television show. Proceeds will allow the nonprofit foundation to fulfill grant requests that Cherry Hill faculty members make through the foundation's Web site.
Organizers said that during a time of limited state funding and increased pressure on taxpayers, raising money in alternative ways allows the district's schools to offer high-caliber programming.
In the past, the foundation has supported after-school tutoring at Cherry Hill West and a rock climbing program at Bret Harte Elementary School.
"It's a great morale booster for our teachers and our students," said Dennis Davidow, vice president of the foundation. "We hope this is the first of many events we will have to support the public schools." Read more... An Educator's Extended Legacy Mr. Edward Branin was a respected and loved educator in Cherry Hill.
